Window cleaning can be full of peril! In my line of work, you end up seeing a lot of things up on rooves. Usually, we see balls, frisbees, or the odd bird nest but one day we found something, or someone, that really surprised me.

One day, we were at a client’s home to wash their windows. It was a hot summer day so some of their windows were open at the time. All of a sudden we heard the pitter-patter of small feet and this tiny voice coming from above. Turns out, the little spy had snuck away from their parents, climbed out of a window, and decided the roof was the most fun playground ever! 

Safe to say, that was the biggest shock I’ve experienced on a job to date! (Don’t worry. The toddler was safely returned to their parents shortly after we spotted them). Babysitting isn’t my strongest skill – but thankfully cleaning windows and gutters is!

Did you know there are thousands of haunted driveways all over the US and Canada?
Well, there probably are…I was reading some crazy statistics recently. According to researchers at the US Nationwide Children’s Hospital, there were 1,647 fatalities from cardiac-related injuries from 1990 to 2006……from shoveling snow! 

Dr. Barry Franklin, a cardiologist, said that even with healthy young people, their heart rate and blood pressure increased more from shovelling snow than when they exercised on a treadmill. He then said, “Combine this with cold air, which causes arteries to constrict and decrease blood supply, you have a perfect storm for a heart attack“. Scary stuff!

Let’s talk all things gutters! Gutters are an essential part of a home’s ecosystem. Your gutters channel water away from your roof toward a downspout that allows water to safely drain away from your home. Both downspouts and gutters need to be cleared to avoid sagging, leaking, or an overflow. 
What does a clog do to my gutter?

Debris in your gutter can become a home to rodents and other pests. Over time, those rodents and pests may come into your home or will keep adding to the weight of your gutter. A clogged gutter can put a weight strain on your gutter and the fascia (the boards behind the gutter). If the gutter becomes too heavy with debris, it can collapse off the roof of your home. This can damage the exterior of your house, the fascia, and the shingles of your roof. That kind of damage adds up fast and can go from cleaning out your gutter to spending thousands in gutter and roof repairs!

Too many times, I have seen homeowners losing their mind (and their money) over extensive damage to their house from a collapsed gutter. What do you say when your kid asks where their beloved dog went? You can’t say Fido went to heaven because the gutter you promised to fix fell on him! What happens if my gutter and downspout overflow? When water from your gutter has nowhere to go, it will collect and overflow into your foundation. Depending on the condition of your foundation, water can leak into your basement and can put your home at risk for mold. Over time, water will continue to damage your foundation which can cost upwards of $10,000 to repair!
How often should I clear my gutters?

I recommend that you clear your gutters at least twice a year. If you have trees close to your home, you should clear your gutters more often. Clearing your gutters in the spring and fall will allow your gutters to drain away spring showers and prepare your home for winter. Sitting water in your gutter during winter can cause that water to freeze and damage your gutter, potentially damaging your house and causing drainage issues in the spring.

How to maintain your gutters with ease!

Your gutters are a vital part of your home’s ecosystem. Very few people realize how important it is to clear their gutters every year! Maintaining your gutters can save you from paying costly repairs to your gutters or the exterior of your house. 

Ever wondered how the pros do it? Here’s my professional tips on maintaining your gutters:

1. Wear waterproof gloves! Debris can be made up of a variety of items including leaves and sticks, so wearing a good pair of gloves will keep your hands safe. Water can collect under layers of thick leaves so having waterproof gloves is key.

2. Wear safety glasses! Not just glasses but clothing too. Wearing the appropriate clothes and safety equipment will prevent you from getting hurt when clearing out debris.

3. A sturdy ladder! You will need a good ladder that is long enough to reach your gutter and won’t move or fall while you’re working on it. Placing your ladder on even ground with a stabilizer is ideal. Having an extra person to hold the base of the ladder can help prevent the ladder from moving too.

4. Gutter clearing tools and a pressure washer! Having tools such as a rake and scoop help clear large debris faster. Equally, a pressure washer can speed up the process and can help wash away any smaller debris or sediment.

5. Test the gutter! Once clean, run your hose into your gutter to test for any leaking or sagging sections. Finding problem areas early can help prevent damage to your house or costly repairs to your gutter system.

Cleaning out our gutters is a chore we all do every year. It’s a vital chore to ensure your home looks clean and functions! But, there are some hidden risks we all take. 

Falls are the third leading cause of injury, or worse, in all age groups. As a professional, I know how easy it is to slip and fall while doing something as mundane as cleaning out your gutters.

There are many factors to consider when you’re deciding to clear your gutters by yourself or if you use a professional service. So here are some of my tips on when you should call a professional instead of risking your neck!

Time, Risk, and Quality:
Time. Time can be a big factor when considering a professional to clean your gutters. As a professional, I have all the equipment I need to clean gutters efficiently AND to take safety precautions. It’s VITAL to take your time when cleaning your gutters. A poorly placed ladder, a slippery step, or a rushed movement can lead to a fall! Take your time or call a professional to do it for you. Risk. There are many risks to consider when clearing your gutters. I strongly recommend you to call a professional if you are inexperienced on a ladder. Knowing where to place a ladder and how to work on one are necessary to prevent falls. Power lines are dangerous. Period.
Do not attempt to work near or around power lines. Always call a professional. Low hanging trees are a unique kind of risk. If you have trees near your home you should be cleaning out your gutters more than twice a year. Low hanging branches can create obstacles when you are working on your gutters and can lead to falls or damage to your house. Never forget, professionals are insured for any injuries – you are not.
